THEY'RE ALL AROUND US
Since the recent events in our nation, I have been contemplating what it means to be a good leader.
People paint a leader to be someone strong, assertive and domineering, and I'm sure you've all read the quotes about bossy girls having leadership skills, but really game changers are hiding all around us.
To me a leader is someone who is inclusive and fair to others. Someone who is confident in themselves and what they believe. Someone who can be a helping hand and is willing to put others before themselves.
On the 1st of March the YWCA and SHAMA brought together 15 young girls for a fun, team building retreat, and I was lucky enough to be a part of it. It was such an amazing opportunity to not only connect with new people but to really push ourselves to be the leaders we were born to be. One activity where I felt we had to not only work together as a team but also be completely confident in ourselves, was when we went caving in the dark. We had to completely rely on each other for direction, as we were linked and could not see a thing. The challenge was fun and difficult because you not only had yourself to worry about but the whole group as well. We really had to communicate with each other to make sure we didn't leave anyone behind. We also learned to be patient as not everyone moved through the cave as fast some wanted to.
In times of tragedy when need leaders who will guide us through the dark and bring us to our peace. Our prime minister has shown us that you can lead with kindness, equality and pride. We can learn so much from people like her who understand what our world needs more of.
